And while I wouldn't say they were feminsit icons, I do actually see David's point too.

Perhaps I also should have phrased that last reply better and should have said I wouldn't claim them to be MY feminist icons. They certainly can be icons to other people.Frank Collinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00680654042528560764noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3737235139994190228.post-83746316138593034172011-05-09T20:30:49.298+01:002011-05-09T20:30:49.298+01:00Francis, they didn't survive DESPITE the etc e...Francis, they didn't survive DESPITE the etc etc etc. They were joining in with it.Steve Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15992098012803570361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3737235139994190228.post-83212865458196095472011-05-09T18:32:38.573+01:002011-05-09T18:32:38.573+01:00Anne Bonny and Mary Read can't be feminist ico...Anne Bonny and Mary Read can't be feminist icons because they aren't nice?

Isn't that a bit of a double standard?

I admit, they aren't exactly role model material (after all, if my daughter wanted to emulate the career of a criminal, I'd prefer her to pick one that was successful), but no one said they were.

As an aside, Anne Bonny vanishes from history after her last stand alongside Mary Read on the Revenge. Given the Doctor's professed fondness for Bad Girls, could she be Companion Material?David Webbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11648632077632519082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3737235139994190228.post-87880852188363746212011-05-09T18:28:02.316+01:002011-05-09T18:28:02.316+01:00I don't see why they can't be feminist ico...I don't see why they can't be feminist icons if they want to be, or if other people want to be.

Being successful in their own right and with no attempt to disguise their gender - both Read and Bonny were respected by the crew they served with (both with Calico Jack Rackham on the Revenge )and seemed more than happy to meet that world on it's own terms.

Saying they can't be feminist icons because they weren't nice...well, it seems a bit weak, really.

Granted, we want our daughters to have better role models than career criminals (especially ones that got caught), but no one is suggesting they were.

As a side note, Anne Bonny disappears from history completely. Read died in prison, Calico Jack was hanged, but Anne Bonny just vanishes. You can't help wonder whether she'd be companion material...given how much the Doctor likes a bad girl.David Webbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11648632077632519082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3737235139994190228.post-67904185834774372752011-05-09T13:13:15.555+01:002011-05-09T13:13:15.555+01:00Well, quite. Murder, rape and plunder on the high seas? That hardly qualifies them as feminist icons for our daughters.
