KAREN GILLAN - New Doctor Who companion

Breaking News:
21 year old British actress Karen Gillan has been announced as the new companion for Series Five of Doctor Who. She's already played a Soothsayer in the series, in The Fires Of Pompeii but is relatively unknown with a number of roles in Channel 4's The Kevin Bishop Show and Stacked and a forthcoming appearance in Outcast.

Joining Matt Smith in the TARDIS, she said: "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. - I just can't wait to get started."

"The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him," she added.

The show's writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said that the game was up when Gillan walked through the door at auditions, describing her as "funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy".

"A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too," he added.

Piers Wenger, Doctor Who executive producer and head of drama BBC Wales, added: "We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic."

Loving the fact we'll have two relative unknowns in the TARDIS. Brave decision not to cast a big name to bolster ratings but hopefully a sign of complete faith in both actors and in the show itself. Happy Fan.

Part of me worries that Series 5 of Dr Who might become a bit of a teen show with the usual bevvy of attractive young actors (i.e. become a kids show rather than a family show).

But still... she looks, ahem, very attractive. And I do like redheads. Mind you, she's almost young enough to be my daughter. :)

  3. Casting's fine with me.

I too like the thinking behind the casting - Matt Smith isn't a huge household name in the same way that Eccleston was/is - and now a virtual unknown for the companion.

Smith is slowly going up in my estimation. I'm watching Party Animals at the moment on BBCHD and he's really rather good in it. Gillan is an unknown quantity but then remember the negativity that followed the announcement of Billie Piper and what a revelation she was.

Hedge your bets, I say. We've had much younger actors in the companion role. There's a lot of reverse ageism flying about from older fans which is partly understandable and partly unnecessary.

And if it worked for Star Trek it might work for Who!
